Employees needed safety. HR needed data. Both couldn't be sacrificed.
An insurance group was launching Pulse into a crowded wellness market. The core tension: employees feared HR would see their data, while HR teams needed aggregate insights to justify the spend. The design had to earn the trust of two very different audiences without compromising either.

Trust as a feature, not a footnote in the privacy policy.
Two separate experiences were designed — a private employee mood journal and an anonymised HR trend dashboard — with a visible 'privacy wall' element reinforcing data separation on every screen. A 'My Data' section let employees see, toggle, and delete their data in one tap. A five-day onboarding sequence, shaped with behavioural psychologists, used early wins and commitment devices to build the habit.

When people feel safe, they actually show up.
Pulse achieved a 71% employee opt-in rate across pilot companies — exceptionally high for a voluntary tool — driven by the transparent privacy design that HR teams actively promoted. Monthly retention reached 64%, more than double the 28% industry average. HR administrators gave the insights dashboard an NPS of +62.
